Yasmine Yahiatène
Yasmine Yahiatène is a multidisciplinary artist. She studied video and performance at the Académie of Fine Arts in Tournai (France), at university of Fine Arts in Valencia (Spain) and during the Rencontres Audiovisuelles in Lille (France).
In 2016, her video mapping installation Ma mère, aussi was exhibited in France and in Switzerland. The video mapping installation projected onto Lille-Flandres station, J’avais 10 ans (collective creation), won the second prize at the Lille International Video Mapping Competition. In 2019, she created the Collectif Oxo with whom she is developing the OXO Beat Gender project, an interactive video installation featuring five portraits of women forgotten by history. OXO Beat Gender was exhibited at the Never Apart Gallery for the Micro-Mapping 2019 exhibition in Montreal as well as for the _Matild_a exhibition at BRASS in 2022 in Brussels.
At the same time, Yasmine appeared in Philippe Lion’s film Plein la vue in 2017 and began working with Compagnie ZA! as a performer and video artist in the show À ta place, which premiered at the Festival Mondial des Théâtres de Marionnettes 2021 and toured France until 2023.
In 2020, she brought her first creation to the stage and began writing La fracture, a show in which she exposes herself, interprets her story alone on the stage and uses video as her acting partner. In La fracture, she deciphers an intimate and complex relationship with her father. By seeking to reconnect with him through a variety of means, she revisits the Algerian War, her father’s childhood in Kabylia, his exile, his alcoholism and the commonalities between these subjects – silence, taboo and shame – in order to begin a process of reparation and resilience.
La fracture premiered in 2022 at Atelier 210 (Brussels, BE) in co-presentation with Kaaitheatre, and was programmed at the Festival Actoral (Marseille, FR) and the Fast-forward Festival (Dresden, DE), where it won the Youth Jury Prize for Best Performance.
La fracture continues to tour in 2023, notably at the MONTY Festival (Antwerp, BE), the Emulation Festival (Liège, BE), the Jurányi Art Incubator House Festival (Budapest, HU), the Tweetakt Festival (Utrecht, NL), the Belluard Festival (Fribourg, CH), the Festival de la cité (Lausanne, CH), the Kampagnel International Summer Festival (Hamburg, DE) and other European theatres. The show was nominated for the Maeterlinck Critics’ Prize in the best set design category.
In September 2022, she performed in Et ta soeur, directed by Lou Joubert for the F.A.M.E festival (Brussels feminist festival), as part of the Manx Cat Project presented in 2023 at the Théatre de Liège, MARS-Mons and the Maison Poème (Brussels, BE).
Driven by a dynamic of “the intimate is political”, Yasmine was invited by La Bellone in November 2022 to take up residency on a future project, Les châteaux de ma mère, with which she continued her identity research linked to her roots, but this time through the prism of the female figures in her family, in particular her mother and the taboo relationship to suicide.
In May 2023 she was invited by the CITF and WBI to take part in the Pépinière d’artistes in Montreal, a meeting between different artists from the French-speaking world around the theme FLAMBOYANT-E-S COMME DES ORACLES.
